Weekend DIY Project: Build Your Own Floating Shelf

Looking for a simple weekend project that adds style and function to your home? A floating shelf is the perfect choice. With just a few tools and supplies — many of which you can find at NL Distributors — you can create custom shelving that looks like it came straight from a design magazine.

What You’ll Need

  • Fasteners: Heavy-duty screws & anchors (available at NL Distributors)

  • Brackets: Floating shelf brackets or L-brackets

  • Board: 1" x 8" pine, oak, or reclaimed wood

  • Sandpaper (120- and 220-grit)

  • Wood stain or paint

  • Polyurethane sealer (optional)

  • Drill & drill bits

  • Tape measure & level

💡 Tip: For a strong hold, choose the right screws and anchors for your wall type. Our team at NL Distributors can help you pick the best fasteners for drywall, concrete, or studs.

Step 1: Cut and Prep the Wood

Measure your space and cut your board to the desired length. Sand it smooth and apply stain or paint for a custom finish.

Step 2: Mark and Install Brackets

Use a level and tape measure to mark your bracket placement. For maximum strength, secure brackets into studs. If studs aren’t available, use the correct anchors for your wall.

Step 3: Mount the Shelf

Slide the finished board onto your brackets and make sure it’s level. Tighten screws for a secure fit.

Step 4: Style It

Once installed, your shelf is ready to hold décor, books, plants, or even tools in a workshop.
